As Prince Harry pushes to reconnect with his family, insiders say his plans for more UK time are fuelling tension with wife Meghan – and their new ‘agreement’ could change everything
And now, insiders tell heat that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are butting heads as the duke feels a stronger pull back to the UK – while his wife of eight years remains determined to stay put in LA, with no desire to uproot the life she’s built there.
With the tension said to be building behind closed doors, the couple are reportedly trying to put an ‘agreement’ in place to ease the pressure and avoid things escalating further.
Our insider explains, ‘Harry dreams of a compromise where he can come back to the UK more often, potentially as a part-time working royal again. He’d love Meghan to join him – but there’s no way she’d move back, even part time. She feels there’s too much open hostility towards her.
‘They’re figuring out an agreement where Meghan accompanies him when it suits her. She’s very independent, so she’s leaving it up to Harry to navigate it but the feeling is it’s very much a make-or-break situation. Unless someone compromises it will be difficult to see how this pact could work out between them.’
Harry, 41, travelled to the UK alone last month for the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games, but he also accepted a invitation from King Charles to visit Highgrove House on 10 July – with Meghan and their two children Archie, seven, and five-year-old Lilibet joining the visit. While the Sussexes weren’t photographed publicly, Meghan later posted a carousel of images from the day to her 4.7 million Instagram followers. Buckingham Palace described it as a ‘private family occasion’ that lasted ‘for an hour or so’.
The visit – the first time the Sussexes had spent time with King Charles in four years – was widely seen as a positive step, and Harry is already expected to return to the UK in September for the WellChild Awards. There are also rumours that Charles has invited the Sussexes to spend time at Balmoral this month.
But back in California, Meghan, 45, has reportedly raised eyebrows. During a solo outing in LA, where she attended a screening for Cookie Queens, a documentary about the Girl Scouts on which she serves as an executive producer, observers noted the duchess wasn’t wearing her engagement ring – and our insider claims it was no accident.
‘Meghan’s too media savvy to accidentally step out without her ring,’ they continue. ‘It’s almost like she’s reminding everyone, including Harry, that she’s still the independent, self-assured, driven woman he fell in love with. And if he wants to take her for granted, it’ll be at his peril.’
It’s not the first time the couple’s relationship has been placed under the microscope. A Vanity Fair article last year caused a stir when it referenced claims that Meghan’s team had been shopping around for a ‘post-divorce book’ deal. Those allegations were denied by a source close to Meghan, and Harry has also dismissed talk of a split amid speculation of a ‘professional separation’.
While in New York in December 2024, Harry addressed the rumours with a laugh, saying, ‘We’ve apparently divorced maybe 10, 12 times. It’s hard to keep up with, but that’s why you just ignore it.’
Still, despite Harry’s insistence that all is well, sources suggest their day-to-day lives remain unusually separate. ‘Meghan’s constantly taking meetings in LA, and is handling a lot of the Netflix negotiations,’ the source says. ‘Harry’s taken a back seat as he’s busy with his charitable work, and mending fences with his father.
‘Meghan’s taking more of the responsibility for bringing in the money. They come together for meals and family time, but the days go by quickly when they’re pulled in different directions.
‘They have very full, independent lives. Culturally, LA’s where Meghan feels comfortable – she never took to the stuffiness of England. It’s hard to imagine her agreeing to uproot the life she’s built in California.’
And a second insider claims another flashpoint is emerging too – their children’s education. ‘It’s creating stress for the whole family,’ says the source. ‘Those close to them believe this issue could cause a big problem – Meghan won’t budge.
‘Harry understands, but can’t rule out a British education. He wants his children to have a meaningful connection with that side of their family. He’d prefer the kids to attend a mixed school, and has even explored the possibility of a day-pupil arrangement.’
Last September, singer Joss Stone – a friend of Harry who moved back to Devon from Nashville a year ago with her young family – added to the chatter when she shared that the prince had told her how ‘wonderful’ UK schools were when they both attended the WellChild awards.
‘It’s exactly why we felt drawn to come back – for the kids to grow up surrounded by family, friends, a strong sense of belonging and, most importantly, in a safe environment,’ she said.
And the insider warns that if the couple can’t agree on a workable path forward, the stakes could be high. ‘Education is just the symptom – the bigger issue is deciding where home actually is,’ the source says. ‘Friends are worried the disagreement risks ending in a complete stalemate.
‘If neither of them is prepared to compromise, the consequences for their relationship could be significant.’
